Governor Wes Moore has announced $5 million in grants to help first-generation students across Maryland access post-secondary education. The funding, provided through the Next Generation Scholars of Maryland Program for the 2025–2026 academic year, will support community-based organizations serving students in low-income, high-poverty school districts.

Among the recipients is First Generation College Bound, a member of the Maryland Alliance for College Affordability and Equity, a client whom Manis, Canning, and Associates are proud to represent. First Generation College Bound is a nonprofit organization committed to preparing students for success in college and beyond. First Generation College Bound is a community-based organization that offers youth and their families a “pipeline” of educational interventions comprising academic readiness, supportive services and guidance to achieve high school graduation, college admissions, and earn a post-secondary degree.

Governor Moore emphasized the state’s commitment to creating multiple pathways to success for Maryland students. “As we work to prepare the next generation to join Maryland’s workforce, we must ensure that students from every corner of our state are included in that vision,” he said. “And to end the myth that every Marylander must attend a 4-year institution to be successful, we’re doubling down on our efforts to connect more students to the 2-year institutions, trade schools, and apprenticeship programs. Because in Maryland, a comprehensive approach to building our workforce means encouraging every path to success, and leaving no one behind.” By investing in programs like First Generation College Bound, the state aims to equip students with the tools, confidence, and opportunities needed to thrive in education and the workforce.

First Generation College Bound Founder and CEO Joe Fisher expressed appreciation for the grant, stating, “We are honored to partner with the Maryland Higher Education Commission in advancing the governor’s vision for equitable access to higher education. Through the Next Generation Scholars Program, we are helping to ensure that talented students from every background are prepared to succeed in college and contribute to Maryland’s future. Our shared commitment is opening doors to opportunity, strengthening our communities, and building a more competitive state.”
