Governor Wes Moore has appointed Sen. Michael A. Jackson (D–Calvert, Charles & Prince George’s) as the next superintendent of the Maryland State Police, following the upcoming retirement of Col. Roland L. Butler on November 1. Jackson brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience, including 22 years with the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office, eight as an elected sheriff, before joining the Maryland General Assembly. Currently serving on the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, Jackson has been a fixture in state public safety and fiscal policy discussions.
Governor Moore commended Butler’s 31 years of service, describing him as a “true public servant.” He added, “During Colonel Butler’s tenure at the helm of State Police, Maryland has become a national leader in crime reduction and public safety gains. He leaves behind a profound legacy as he enters retirement. And I also know Senator Michael A. Jackson — an exceptional public servant in his own right — will build on the foundation Colonel Butler laid.”
Sen. Jackson’s appointment drew bipartisan acknowledgment and optimism. Senate Majority Leader Nancy King (D–Montgomery) praised him as “one of our best members,” while Sen. Cory McCray (D–Baltimore City) highlighted his leadership on police reform, noting Jackson’s “lived experience and qualification” that will guide “constitutional policing with transparency and community partnership.” Former colleagues and local officials echoed support, citing his innovative leadership and collaborative approach during his tenure as sheriff. Jackson will assume his new role on November 12, following an interim period led by Lt. Col. Daniel C. Pickett.
