Del. Vanessa Atterbeary, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, announced that she will resign from the House of Delegates next month to focus on her campaign for Howard County executive. Her departure follows last week’s announcement that House Speaker Adrienne Jones will step down. On December 16th, the House will convene in a special session to elect a new speaker. Democratic members appear to be consolidating support around Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk as Jones’ successor.
Atterbeary filed earlier this fall to run for county executive, anticipating Jones’ continued leadership and reelection campaign. With Atterbeary stepping down and Peña-Melnyk positioned for potential elevation, two House standing committees, Ways and Means Committee and Health and Government Operations Committee, are poised for leadership changes ahead of the 2026 legislative session.
In a resignation letter to Speaker Pro Tem Dana Stein, Atterbeary stated that her resignation will take effect on Jan. 14, the first day of the 2026 session. She reflected on her tenure, noting pride in the work accomplished during her service. Ways and Means Vice Chair Del. Jheanelle Wilkins praised Atterbeary’s leadership and commitment to students and families, offering well-wishes as she transitions to the next phase of her public service.
