Democratic Comptroller candidates Mayor Tim Adams and Delegate Brooke Lierman spoke at a forum Tuesday evening, and each discussed their vision for the agency.

Both Mayor Adams and Delegate Lierman agreed that it is essential that the Comptroller focus on closing tax loopholes to ensure businesses are paying a proportionate tax rate. They also agreed that, as a member of the Board of Public Works, they would focus on approving contracts that meet goals for inclusion of minority and disadvantaged businesses.

The candidates further agreed that the public-private partnership for Governor Hogan’s Capital Beltway and I-270 expansion plan should have focused on contracting union labor and expressed concerns with furthering the project.

The two differed on their views about the Comptroller’s role in certain policy decisions. Mayor Adams believes that issues like school construction and state alcohol and tobacco laws should be the responsibility of the Comptroller and Board of Public Works, whereas Delegate Lierman believes they should be handled by their established agencies.

The winner of the July 19 Democratic primary for Comptroller will face Harford County Executive Barry Glassman in the general election, who is currently running unopposed in the Republican primary.
